Als wir das Lügen lernten
In her first novel, Ilinca Florian recounts a society in upheaval. Bucharest at the end of the eighties. The carefree summer the family spent at the Black Sea is over. Autumn and returning to the big city bring about renewed worries of everyday social life. The young narrator tells of the adult world, the fine lines that run through her and the question that looms in the air: stay or go? Should we leave home and travel to a place unknown that promises a free and carefree life? The mother threatens to break the approaching exile and no one can guess why. Only her own daughter sees more, notices the short but indignant touches on one hand and warm looks on the other. She becomes the silent witness to the love affair between her mother and another man.
