Die Schatten eines Jahres
When dedicated peace activist Mathilde is ousted for a sitting blockade for an imposition at the age of seventy-eight, the press moves in. Mathilde speaks of her beginnings as a pacifist. Suddenly a time springs to mind that she’s never talked about before: her year in Barcelona at the beginning of World War II when she was young and fell in love with a spy. The novel tells the story of the transformation of a woman who only gradually becomes aware of the consequences of her own political position, highlighting various phases of the peace movement. The novel also carries readers off to a phase of German-Spanish history. Nazi Germans in Barcelona support Franco. But with the onset of World War II, the uncertainty about how the loyalties assert themselves in an emergency increases.
