Existenzkrise der Demokratie – Zur politischen Theorie des Liberalismus in der Zwischenkriegszeit
In the period between the world wars, democracy entered a crisis. Communism and fascism offered models of an alternative modernity. Contrary to the decline of political liberalism, intellectual debates at that time about the foundations of democracy are an essential part of political theory. Jens Hacke’s brilliant study of the history of ideas provides a visualization of how ideas were developed since the 1920s that were to characterize the post-1945 world and demand new relevance in the light of current crisis phenomena: the theory of totalitarianism, the concept of defensive democracy and the concept of a tamed capitalism.
